Combined Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine in Treatment of Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Objective To observe the effect of combining traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine in the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Methods We divided 120 cases of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from Jan 2006 to Dec 2008 randomly into Western medicine group and combination group,with 60 cases in each group.The Western medicine group was given conventional Western medicine,and the traditional Chinese medicine decoction was added to the combination group on the basis of conventional Western medicine according to syndrome differentiation principle.Results In the combination group,40 cases were markedly effective,16 cases improved,3 cases invalid and one case died,and in the Western medicine group,30 cases were markedly effective,20 cases improved,7 cases invalid and 3 cases died,with a significant difference between the two groups(P0.05).The obvious adverse reactions such as kidney impairment and allergy failed to be found after the course of treatment finished.Conclusion Combined traditional Chinese medicine is superior to Western medicine in the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
