THE EXPRESSION AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE OF VASCULAR ENDOTHELIAL GROWTH FACTOR IN CERVICAL CARCINOMA

Abstract

Objective To study the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and its clinical significance in carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Methods The expression of VEGF was detected in tissue of 42 cases of cervical carcinoma and 13 normal cervix by LSAB immunohistochemical technique. Results The positive expression of VEGF in cancer tissue was 54.8%(23/42), the expression was negative in normal cervical tissue. The positive expression rate was higher in tumors bigger than or equal to 4 cm in diameters or those with interstitial invasion more than 1/2 than that of smaller or superficial ones (χ 2= 4.52, 4.00; P0.05). The expression was also higher in cases with parametrial invasion or pelvic lymph node metastasis than those without (χ 2= 4.48, 7.27; P0.05). Conclusion The expression of VEGF is related to local invasion and metastasis in cervical carcinoma, which can be used as one of the parameters for judgement of the biological behavior of the disease.
