Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of the fibrinogen on carotid arterioles atherosclerosis. Methods The incidence rate of carotid atherosclerotic plaque and the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) of 118 hypertensive patients were detected and the relationship of fibrinogen with the rate of carotid atherosclerotic plaque and carotid IMT was observed. Results The incidence rate of carotid artery atherosclerotic plaque, carotid IMT, the history of hypertension, age and total plasma cholesterol of the hypertensive patients were significantly different among the groups with different fibrinogen level (P0.05 or P0.01). With linear regression analysis, carotid IMT, the history of hypertension were identified as significant and independent factors for fibrinogen(P0.01). Conclusions The fibrinogen is related to carotid atherosclerotic plaque and the carotid IMT and it may take part in the formation and progression of atherosclerosis.
