Abstract

Objective To observe the changes of serum levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 in newborn infants with hypoxic-ische-mic encephalopathy(HIE),and to explore their roles in HIE.Methods There were 94 newborn infants with HIE hospitalized from Jan.2007 to Jun.2010 included as experimental groups.32 normal newborns were selected as control group.Serum levels of MIF and MMP-9 were detected by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) in 2 groups, correlation analysis was performed between MIF and MMP-9 in children with HIE.Results Serum levels of MIF and MMP-9 in HIE group were significantly higher than control group(P0.01).Compared with control group, levels of MIF and MMP-9 in mild, moderate and severe HIE patients were markedly increased(P0.05).The differences among 3 subgroups in HIE were also significant(P0.01),and levels of MIF were the highest in patients with severe HIE.Serum MMP-9 levels of severe HIE newborns were highest in mild, moderate and severe HIE groups(P0.05).There was positive correlation between MIF and MMP-9 in HIE patients(r=0.63,P0.01).Conclusions MIF and MMP-9 may be involved in the pathogenesis of HIE.Detection of MIF and MMP-9 was significant in predicting the prognosis of HIE.
