Abstract

Objective To study the feasibility and advantage of insulin glargine combined with acarbose in treating elderly type 2 diabetics mellitus. Methods Sixty-four cases of elderly type 2 diabetic patients accepted intensive treatment with good blood glucose(BG) were divided into two groups(glargine group and premixed group) at random.Patients in glargine group were injected insulin once everyday, premixed group injected twice a day.The two groups were compared after treatment with the mean level of fast blood glucose(FBG),insulin dose, postprandial glucose(PG),the HbA1c and body mass index(BMI) and the incidence rate of the hypoglycemia. Results The FBG,FPG,HbA1c and BMI of the two groups were similar(P0.05).Insulin dose and the incidence rate of hypoglycemia in glargine group were obviously lower than that in premixed group(P0.05).Conclusion It is more effective, safer and convenient for elderly diabetic patients to use insulin glargine combined with acarbose, with low incidence of hypoglycemia.
