Abstract

Objective To study the relationship between plasma homocysteine(Hcy) and cerebral infarction,as well as the impact of Hcy on severity of the disease. Methods Determined levels of plasma Hcy for 50 cases of cerebral infarction patients and 50 healthy cases, and recorded their age, gender, neurological deficit score [national institutes of health stroke scale(NIHSS)],blood pressure and blood sugar. And analysis of the relationship between them by multiple linear regression analysis. Results The level of Hcy of cerebral infartion group was significantly higher than that of control group(P=0.025),and the proportion of high Hcy patients of the case group(41%) was significantly higher than that of control group(10%),the difference was statistically significant(P=0.017).In infartion group, there was no signifant difference in Hcy between patients with hypertension and diabetes and patients without them(P=0.758 and 0.615).NIHSS score of high Hcy patients was significantly higher than that of normal Hcy patients(P=0.037),and the analysis of multivariate stepwise Logistic regression showed that high Hcy was an independent risk factor for cerebral infarction(OR:4.02,95% CI:2.33-10.24,P= 0.007).Conclusions High Hcy is a risk factor of cerebral infarction, and increases the severity of the disease.
