Abstract

Objective To investigate the value of a new index-Tei index for estimating left ventricular global function of essential hypertension. Methods This study included 74 patients with essential(hypertension divided into three groups according to the classifications issued) by the WHO for the hypertension evaluation in which hypertension was classified in 3 stages.Group A consisted of 38 cases matching stage 1.Group B consisted of 22 cases, complicated heart hypertrophy.Group 3 had 14 stage 3(severe) cases, with complication of left heart failure. There were 32 normal subjects in-group D,which acted as the control group. The conventional echo-Doppler parameters assessed included the IVS,LVPW,LVEDD,E/A ratio,S/D ratio, ejection fraction(EF)and Tei index. Results E/A ratio in groups A and B was all less than 1(P0.05);The S/D ratio increased compared with group D(P0.05);The Tei index in groups A,B and C was all greater than the control group(group D) and progressively increased(P0.001).Conclusion The Tei index would be valuable and simple for estimating the left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions with high sensitivity in hypertension patients.
