Abstract
Objective Helicobacter pylori (Hp) can cause chronic inflammation and a variety of metaplasia in gastric mucosal epithelial cells, and increase pepsinogen secretion, resulting in changes of blood pepsinogen content. In this study, serum pepsinogen levels were determined in Hp-associated gastritis patients in order to understand its clinical value. Methods Superficial gastritis and atrophic gastritis patients confirmed by endoscopy and pathology were divided into Hp-positive and Hp-negative groups. Concentrations of PGI, PGII in serum were detected by ELISA, and serum Hp-IgG antibodies were assayed using the qualitative analysis method. Results Whether superficial gastritis or atrophic gastritis, PGI and PG II were significantly higher in Hp-positive group than in Hp-negative group (P 0.05), however serum PGI concentration in patients with atrophic gastritis was significantly lower than superficial gastritis patients (P 0.05). Conclusion PGI, PGII was increased in chronic gastritis patients with Hp infection, the lower concentration of PGI may reflect the degree of gastric mucosal lesions.
