Comparative study on treatment of aged schizophrenic patients with risperidone

Abstract

Objective:To compare the efficacy and safety of risperidone and perphenazine in the aged patients with primary onset schizophrenia. Method:Ninety-six aged inpatients with primary onset schizophrenia were divided into risperidone group or perphenazine group respectively for 8 weeks.The efficacy was evaluated by brief psychiatric rating scale(BPRS),and the side effect was assessed with treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS). Results:There was no significant difference in efficacy between risperidone and perphenazine.The main side effects of risperidone were insomnia,nausea and vomiting.EPS induced by perphenazine was rather severe. Conclusion:It is demonstrated that risperidone has good efficacy and high safety in the treatment of aged primary onset of schizophrenia patients,so it is beneficial to maintained treatment.
