Comparative study of risperidone and perphenazine in senile schizophrenia

Abstract

Objective:To compare the clinical effect and safety in senile schizophrenic patients treated by risperidone or perphenazine.Method:Sixty-six senile schizophrenic patients were randomly divided into risperidone group and perphenazine group,and then received treatments for 8 weeks.Positive and negative symptoms scale(PANSS)and treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS)were used to evaluate the efficacy and side effects respectively.Results:The effects were similar between risperidone and perphenzine,but the negative symptoms improved more quickly in risperidone group than in perphenzine group.Conclusion:Risperidone has similar effect to perphenazine in the treatment of senile schizophrenic patients,with fewer and lighter side effect
