Abstract

Microstructure of peripheral blood cells in Lethrinus erythropterus were morphologically described to accumulate basic data for blood morphological features of L. erythropterus, provide scientific and theoretical basis for breeding and disease control in the future, and provide references for fish physiology and immunology research of L. erythropterus. The blood of L. erythropterus were stained with Wright. Morphological characteristics of blood cells were evaluated with Olympus-BX51 digital microphotography. On the stained smears, seven major types of blood cells were recognized: erythrocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and thrombocyte. Among these cells, erythrocyte was the most abundant and had round nucleus. In quantity, thrombocyte was the largest, lymphocyte the second, then neutrophilic granulocyte and monocyte, basophilic granulocyte the least. Thrombocyte was the highest, accounting for 62. 53% of the total number of white blood cells. Basophilic granulocyte accounted for only 0. 93% of white blood cells.Thrombocyte had the smallest size among leucocytes, while monocyte the largest. Lymphocytes could be divided into three types: small lymphocyte, medium lymphocyte and big lymphocyte.
