Abstract
Objective:To assess prevalence of anemia and its correlation with NYHA-class in patients with chronic heart failure. Method: There were 183 inpatients(mean age [62±12] years ) with chronic heart failure selected in the study. Eight-six patients were in NYHA-class Ⅰand Ⅱ, and ninety-seven ones in class Ⅲ and Ⅳ. Data such as left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular end diastolic diameter, hemoglogic data were detected and compared in 2 groups.Result:Anemia (hemoglobin120 g/L ) was present in 43 patients(24.0%).There were significantly more patients with anemia in NYHA-classⅢ and Ⅳ(30%)compared with that in classⅠand Ⅱ(16.0%,P0.05). There were 4(5.0%)patients died in NYHA-class Ⅰand Ⅱ, and 18 (19.0%)patients died in class Ⅲ and Ⅳ( P0.01) in 17 months duration. Mortality was significantly greater in anemic subjects compared with that in nonanemic subjects (23.0%∶9.0%, P0.01). Conclusion:The patients with chronic heart failure could often suffer from anemia. The degree of anemia is correlated with the severity of heart failure and anemia increase the risk of death in patrents with chronic heart failure.
