Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical features of patients with congestive heart failure(CHF) complicated with anemia and their prognoses. Methods A total of 168 patients with CHF were divided into anemia group(male Hb120 g/L,female110 g/L)and non-anemia group according to their hemoglobin levels. The clinical features and cardiac functions were compared between the 2 groups.Based on clinical, cardiac ultrasound, and hematological examination,we compared the incidences of anemia between slight and severe heart failure groups and assessed the relationship between the severity of CHF and mortality patients in the 2 groups. Results Coronary heart disease and hypertension were the main causes of CHF,with their incidence being 51.8% and 26.2%,respectively in CHF patients.Of the 168 patients,31 had anemia (18.5%).The incidence was significantly higher in patients with severe heart failure(32.4%)than those with slight heart failure(8.2%)(P0.05).Five(5.2%)patients died in NYHA-ⅠandⅡand 11(15.5%)died in NYHA-ⅢandⅣ(P0.05)during 24 months follow-up.Mortality was significantly higher in anemic subjects (25.8%)compared with that in non-anemic subjects(5.8%,P0.01).Serum creatinine was significantly higher in anemia group than innon-anemia group([123.41±52.22]μmol/L vs[91.67±29.13]μmol/L,P0.05).Conclusion Coronary heart disease and hypertension are the main causes of CHF.The patients with chronic heart failure often suffer from anemia;the degree of anemia is associated with the severity of heart failure.CHF patients complicated with anemia have higher mortality.
