Antibiotic Resistance Spectrum of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases Producing Strains: An Analysis

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To study the change in antibiotic resistance spectrum of some main extended spectrum β lactamases (ESBLs) producing strains. METHODS The antibiotic resistance of ESBLs producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli isolated from clinical samples in our hospital during Jan 2000 Dec 2002 was studied retrospectively. RESULTS A total of 389 strains of E. coli and 295 strains K. pneumoniae were isolated. ESBLs produced rate in E. coli and K. pneumoniae were 41.9% and 45.8%, respectively. Imipenem, amikacin, and ceftazidime were susceptible to ESBLs producing E. coli, to ESBLs producing K. pneumoniae were imipenem, cefoperazone/sulbactam and cefepime. The resistance rates of ESBLs producing strains to 10 antibacterial agents were significantly higher than that of non ESBLs producing strains. CONCLUSIONS It has been increasingly occurred of nosocomial infection of ESBLs producing K. pneumoniae and E. coli, especially broad spectrum antibiotic widely applied. Imipenem is one of the susceptible antibiotics to ESBLs producing strains.
