Olanzapine or Chlorpromazine Combined with Sodium Valproate in Treatment of Manic Bipolar Affective Disorder:A Comparison Study

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of olanzapine or chlorpromazine combined with Sodium valproate in the treatment of patients with manic bipolar affective disorder.Methods Seventy cases meeting criteria of CCMD-3 manic bipolar affective disorder were randomly divided into two groups:olanzapine group and chlorpromazine group.The olanzapine group was treated with olanzapine combined with Sodium valproate and the chlorpromazine group with chlorpromazine combined with Sodium valproate.The period of observation was 6 weeks.Bech-Rafaelsen Mania Rating(BRMS)and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS)were used to evaluate the efficacy and side effect.Results In both groups,the total score and decreasing rate of BRMS were significantly reduced from baseline,with no significant differences between two groups.Both of them took effect more quickly.Side effects of the olanzapine group were fewer and mild except weight gain and somnolence.Conclusion The efficacy and safety of olanzapine combined with Sodium valproate are higher in manic bipolar affective disorder.It may be a good choice in the treatment of manic bipolar affective disorder.
