A comparative study of olanzapine combined with lithium in the treatment of mania episode

Abstract

Objective To explore the efficacy and side effects of olanzapine combined with lithium in the treatment of mania episode. Methods Seventy-two patients with mania episode were randomly assigned to receiving olanzapine or haloperidol both combined with lithium for 6 weeks. The efficacy and safety were evaluated with Bech-rafaelsen mania rating scale(BRMS) and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) respectively. Results In both groups , total scores of BRMS were significantly reduced from baseline,and there were no singnifcant differences between two groups (p0.05). However , olanzapine group had fewer side effects than haloperdol.Conclusion Olanzapine combined with lithium is safe and effective in treatment of mania epsiode .
