A comparative study of olanzapine and clozapine combined with lithium in the treatment of mania.

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy and side effects of olanzapine and clozapine both combined with lithium in the treatment of mania. Methods Sixty patients meeting the criteria of CCMD-3 for mania were randomly assigned to receiving olanzapine or clozapine both combined with lithium for 4 weeks.Clinical efficacy and side effects were evaluated with Beth-Rafaelsen mania rating scale (BRMS) and treatment emergent symptom scale (TESS).Results The improvement rate in olanzapine group was 86.67% and that in clozapine group was 83.33%.No significant difference was found in two groups.Olanzapine showed lower side effects than clozapine.Conclusion Olanzapine is an effective and safe antimania agent.
