Abstract

AIM: To investigate the therapeutic effects of carvedilol and metoprolol, the β-receptor inhibitors,on cardiac function and activity tolerance in patients with ischemic heart disease and congestive heart failure(CHF). METHODS: Eighty patients of the ischemic heart disease with CHF(LVEF ≤45%,NYHA of grade II to IV),who received the routine treatment at the same time, were randomly divided into carvedilol and metoprolol groups and treated respectively for three months. The changes of the heart function were observed by color Doppler and the activity tolerance was determined by 6 min walking test.RESULTS: At the end of the three-month treatment, activity tolerance and the heart function of the carvedivol and metoprolol groups were remarkably improved. The left ventricular end systolic volume(LVESV),the left ventricular end diastolic volume(LVEDV)and the LVEF of the Carvedilol group were higher than those of the metoprolol groups(P0.01).CONCLUSION: Carvedilol and metoprolol are very effective in the treatment of the heart disease with CHF and carredilol is better than metoprolol in the improvement of activity tolerance, the LVESV,the LVEDV and the LVEF.
