Abstract
Objective To investigate the expression of CD44V5 proteins in gastric cancer and to explore the mechanism of invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods 60 paraffin-embedded samples of gastric cancer and para-cancer from surgically resected tissues, 15 biopsy samples of chronic surface gastritis were served as controls. The expression of CD44V5 protein was examined by immunohistochemical method. Results The positive expression rates of CD44V5 protein in samples from cancerous and paracancerous tissues were 48.3% and 10%, respectively. The expression rate was zero in the control tissues. The expression rates of CD44V5 in cancerous tissue were significantly higher than those of para-cancer tissue(P〈0.05). The expression of CD44V5 protein correlated statistically with the lymph node metastasis and cancer stage. Conclusion The expression of CD44V5 are correlated to invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer. It could be used as marker to predict metastasis and invasion of gastric cancer and as a prognostic factor as well.
