On Cultural Teaching in College English Teaching

Language and culture are closely related and mutually dependent,thus language teaching and cultural teaching complement each other.Cultural teaching in College English teaching is not only good for students to learn English but also helps them develop the cross-cultural communicative competence.However,there are some problems of cultural teaching in College English teaching,reflecting on a weak awareness of cultural teaching,placing emphasis on pure language teaching.Also,cultural teaching is restricted to classroom teaching. As a result,students have weak cross-cultural communicative competence.To solve these problems,there is an urgent need for College English teachers to reinforce cultural teaching by guiding students to make a comparative study between Chinese and western culture,introducing relevant cultural background,explaining the cultural meanings of vocabulary,and infiltrating cultural teaching by encouraging students to do extracurricular reading and extracurricular activities.
