Abstract
To explore the effects of arsenic on lipid peroxidation level and the capacity of antioxidation by using the method of subchronic animal experiment, the effects of arsenic on lipid peroxidation level and the capacity of antioxidation in the liver of rats were kinetically observed. First, the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) of all the experimental groups were not significantly different (P0.05), after treating arsenic for 30, 90 and 180 days, which indicated that arsenic could not increase the action of lipid peroxidation in the liver of rats. Secondly, at 30, 90 and 180 days the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH Px) in arsenic group were significantly lower than that in control group (P0.05, P0.01). The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of sulphhdryl ( SH) were also significantly decreased at 90 and 180 days (P0.05, P0.01). Arsenic could suppress the activities of antioxidases in the liver of rats. The disturbance of the free radical balance (caused by arsenic) was found expression in decline of antioxidation capacity. The lower levels of GSH Px, SOD and SH in the liver were the major reasons of liver injury.
