Abstract
Objective To know the effects of subchronic exposure to arsenic on lipid peroxidation and antioxidation in the liver and brain of mice. Methods Subchronic toxicity test was applied.Sixty Kunming mice were randomly divided into four groups,15 in each, treated with sodium arsenite through drinking water at the does of 0,0.6,2.5 and 10.0 mg / L respectively, for 90 consecutive days. After 90 days of the treatment, the content of malondialdehyde(MDA),activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and glutathione S-transferase(GST) in the liver and brain tissues were determined. Results The results showed that with the increase of exposure to arsenic, the content of MDA significantly increased and the activities of SOD,GSH-Px significantly decreased with a dose-dependent manner(P0.05);with the increase of exposure to arsenic, the activity of GST increased initially, but decreased subsequently(P0.05).Conclusion Exposure to arsenic can increase lipid peroxidation and decrease the capacity of antioxidation in the liver and brain of mice, which suggests that lipid peroxidation should be involved in arsenic-induced liver and brain damage.
