Treatment of 31 Cases of Schizophrenia with Quetiapine

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of quetiapine with clozapine in treatment of patients with schizophrenia. Method Sixty-one patients with schizophrenia were randomised into two groups, thirty patients treated with clozapine and thirty-one treated with quetiapine. positive and negative symptom scale(PANSS) and treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS) were used to assess efficacy and safety before treatment and at the end of 1, 2, 4 and 8 week. Results The PANSS scores in both groups decreased significantly after the treatment, and there is no significant difference between the two group (P0.05), but the quetiapine grouup had less adverse drug reaction (P0.01). Conclusion Quetiapine has similar efficacy with clozapine in treating schizophrenia, but has less adverse drug reaction than clozapine.
