A comparative study of quetiapine and clozapine in the treatment of recurrent schizophrenia

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety between quetiapine and clozapine in the treatment of recurrent schizophrenia. Methods Thirty-six recurrent schizophrenic patients were treated with quetiapine and thirty-six patients with clozapine.The efficacy was assessed with the Positive And Negative Symptoms Scale(PANSS),and the side effects with the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS).Results The effective rate and marked improvement rate in quetiapine were 77.8% and 61.1%,and these rates in clozapine were 75% and 59%.There were no differences between two groups.The PANSS scores in both groups decreased significantly after treatment.Quetiapine had fewer side effects than clozapine.Conclusion Quetiapine has good efficacy,high safety,few side effects and good compliance in treating schizophrenia.
