A Tentative Study of the Cultural Implication of Shen Congwen's Novels on Western Hunan

Shen Congwen, who has a strong sense of seeking origin, is a pioneering writer of literature of seeking the origin. By comparison and contrast between the urban and the rural, he found the morbid character of the urban inhabitants and the healthy character of the people in western Hunan. So, from the Hunan nature and human feelings of people in western Hunan, a primitive ecological place, he tried to explore the fine qualities precipitated in our national culture. In this way, national spirit could be rebuilt. He carried forward the probe, advocated by such contemporary writer as Luxun, into nationality, which made a deep influence on contemporary literature of seeking the origin.
