Abstract

Objective To explore the curative effects of single Shengdaihuang powder for gastrointestinal failure in children with critically ill. Methods Seventy-one cases of gastrointestinal failure were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group. Thirty-six patients in treatment group received Shengdaihuang powder, and thirty-five cases in control group were cured with Smecta and Cimetidine. Before and after treatment, the cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and TNF in all patients were measured. Results The effect rate in treatment group was 91. 6%, significantly higher than that in control group(48. 5%)(x2=16. 96,P0. 005);the mortality rate in treatment group was significantly lower than that in control group (x2 = 4. 39,P0. 05). After treatment the cytokines IL-6,IL-8 and TNF in treatment group were significantly decreased (P0. 001 ; 0. 01; 0. 01, respectively); and each factor above in control group was decreased non-significantly (P0. 05). Conclusion Shengdaihuang powder could lower inflammatory mediators, and it is obviously effective for gastrointestinal failure in children.
