Abstract
AIM To study the relation of P16 protein expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with metastasis and prognosis. METHODS P16 protein expression was studied in 45 patients with HCC by using immunohistochemical LSAB method and compared with clinical materials. RESULTS P16 protein positive expression in the tumors and their neighboring regions was 40 0% and 84 4%, with a significant difference ( P 0 05). The positive expression of P16 protein was 20 0% in the carcinoma with metastasis and 60 5% without metastasis. P16 protein expression in highly, moderately and poorly differentiated HCC was 50 0%, 27 8% and 22 2%, with an obvious difference between patients with highly differentiated and poorly differentiated HCC ( P 0 05) , between groups with and without metastasis ( P 0 01) . CONCLUSION P16 protein expression is closely related to proliferation, malignant potential and prognosis of HCC.
