Abstract
Objective To assess the relationship between fibrinogen levels and carotid atheromatous plaque. Methods We included 81 patients with ischemic stroke.Carotid artery was assessed by using ultrasonographic methods for the presence of plaque, and subjects were categorized according to the presence(or absence)of plaque.Plasmas fibrinogen, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and other risk factors of atherosclerosis were test, either.Rosults The level of fibrinogen, total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein were higher in subjects with carotid atheromatous plaque. The multivariable analysis showed that high plasma fibrinogen levels were one of the main risk factors of carotid atherosclerosis. Conclusion Fibrinogen may play a active role in development and progression of atherosclerotic plaque.
