Abstract

Objective To investigate safe and effective possibilities of phacoemulsification under topical anesthesia. Methods Effectiveness of topical anesthesia and postoperative visual acuity of phacoemulsifications were surveyed in 102 cases of cataracts under the topical anesthesia. Results All operations were smoothly done under the topical anesthesia without additional retrobulbar or peribulbar anesthesia. All the cases cooperated very well with the doctors during their operations. The duration of the operation was generally 8~15 minutes. The postoperative visual acuity with correction was over 0.5 in cases of 96.08%.Conclusion Phacoemulsifications with topical anesthesia is a safe and effective method for the cases with good psychological quality.
