Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine the clinical distribution and drug resistance of Escherichia coli in our hospital between January and December of 2011, so to provide references for the rational use of antibiotics clinically. METHODS BioMerieux analytic instrument(France) was used to identify Escherichia coli strains isolated from various infected specimens in our hospital. Drug resistances of the strains against common antibiotics were determined, and the results were analyzed by the Whonet 5.4 software. RESULTS Most of the E. coli strains were isolated from the nephrology and endocrinology departments, accounting for 21.38% and 16.04% of the 318 isolated strains, respectively, and the majority of the strains( 167 strains, 52.52%) were found in the urine samples. Drug susceptibility test revealed that imipenem, meropenem, piperacillin / tazobactam, and cefotetan showed high antibacterial activities against the isolated strains, exhibiting a resistance rate of 0, 0.94%, 2.83%, and 2.83%, respectively; resistance rates of the isolated strains against ceftriaxone, cefazolin, cefuroxime sodium, cefuroxime axetil, ampicillin, and piperacillin were over 75.00%, especially that against ampicillin was higher than 90.00%. CONCLUSION The isolated E. coli strains are mainly from urine specimens obtained from patients with urinary tract infections, and drug resistance of the strains is relatively strong. Reinforcing the monitoring of drug resistance of E. coli is required to provide scientific bases for the rational use of antibiotics clinically,so to effectivelyy control the occurrence of nosocomial infections.
