The effect of early treatments with different treatment methods of Angle Class II Division l malocclusion on facial profile

Objective To investigate the treatment effects on facial profile by functional and fixed appliances at the peak stage of development in Class Ⅱ Division l malocclusion.Methods Thirty patients were divided into two groups.One group was treated for 16 months with standard Edgewise appliance(E group);the other group was treated with Twin-block functional appliance(T group).The patients were actively treated and re-examined by using radiographic cephalomentry for 16 months.The cephalometric data before and after the treatment were analyzed statistically.Results Functional treatment could improve Class Ⅱfacial profile effectively.Little changes had been observed in the group with fixed appliance.Conclusion Although the profile can be improved effectively with the functional appliance,more research is need to determine its long-term effect.
