Abstract
Objective:To explore the effects of massive allograft bone trans plantation in the reconstruction of structural bone defect caused by sever trauma and following tumor resection.Methods:From February of1996to September of2001,massive allograft bone transplantations were completed in37patients with extremity bone defects which included5patients with traumatic bone defects and32patients with tumor induced bone deˉfects.There were14cases with segmental bone defects,and23with osteoarticular bone defects.The internal fixation of allograft bone included plate and screws in11cases,inter locking nail in24cases,and tension band in1case.Results:Followed_up ranged from6to81months with an average of31months.One patient suffered recurrence and underwent re_resection,and one patients received amputation because of late infection.Porosis appeared at1to3months approved by radiograms.The average healing time of shaft was18months,and7months at osteoepiphyseal interface.In this study,4interfaces of allograft to host bone were nonunion in3casˉes,infections in5cases,and fractures of allograft bone in3cases.Conclusions:It is necessary to apply inter locking nail fixation,use an appropriate dosage of antibiotics,and avoid the early weight bearing for improving the successful rate of massive allograft bone transplantation.
