Topical Anesthesia in Compound Trabeculectomy for the Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects and feasibility of topical anesthesia in compound trabeculectomy for the treatment of advanced glaucoma.Methods 41 eyes of 36 patients with advanced glaucoma were operated in compound trabeculectomy with topical anesthesia,then observed were the effects of anesthesia and intraoperative complications.Results 33 eyes(81%) reached anesthetic effect Ⅰ,5 eyes(12%) reached anesthetic effect Ⅱ,a total of 38 eyes(93%) operated successfully without local and systemic complications under the conventional anesthesia.But 3 eyes(7%) reaching anesthetic effect Ⅲ with obvious pain could not be operated until retrobulbar anesthesia was adopted.In the process of operation,bleeding occurred in the anterior chambers,but there were no possible local and systemic complications under conventional anesthesia.Conclusion It is safe,reliable,efficient,simple and easy to adopt topical anesthesia in compound trabeculectomy for the treatment of advanced glaucoma.Therefore,it is worthy of clinical application.
