Effect of atorvastatin on blood lipid and its safety in preventing ischemic stroke

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the short-term therapeutic effects and safety of atorvastatin for the treatment of patients with ischemic stroke.Methods: One hundred and forty-eight patients were randomized into 2 groups.They were treated with conventional therapy alone(n=73) or combined with atorvastatin 20 mg·d-1(n=75) at bedtime for 18 weeks.The levels of blood lipid,incidence of ischemic stroke and side effects were determined before and after treatment with or without atorvastatin.Results: After 18-week treatment with atorvastatin(20 mg·d-1),the levels of total cholesterol(TC),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) and triglycerides(TG) obviously decreased as compared with control group(P0.05).No more side effects were observed after treatment with atorvastatin(P0.05).Conclusion: Atorvastatin(20 mg·d-1) can lower the levels of TC,LDL-C and TG,and increase the level of high density lipoprotein cholestero1(HDL-C).Moreover,it do not cause more side effects.
