Therapeutic effect of Qibitongguan decoction on 33 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of Qibitongguan decoction on benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) in the elderly. Methods 62 patients with BPH were randomly divided into two groups. 33 patients in treatment group were treated by Qibitongguan decoction; 29 patients in control group were treated by proscar tablets, with a treatment course of one month for both groups. The therapeutic effect was evaluated after three treatment courses. The international prostatic syndrome score (IPSS),life quality score, prostate volume, uroflowmetry (Qmax) and residual urine were recorded and analyzed before treatment and after one treatment course and three treatment course. Results The IPSS and life quality score of both groups were improved significantly after treatment, as compared with those before treatment. The Qmax and residual urine of treatment group were improved after one treatment course, but prostate volume was decreased slightly. The total effective rate in treatment group (81.82%) was obviously higher than that in control group (68.97%, P0.05).Conclusion Qibitongguan decoction is effective in treating benign prostatic hypertrophy in the elderly.
