Serotyping and susceptibility test of 105 Shigella spp strains

Abstract

Objective To investigate serotype and antibiotics resistance of Shigella in Shanghai. Methods 105 clinical isolated Shigella spp strains were collected and identified. The serotyping and the susceptibity testing were performed. Results Of 105 strains, 51 strains (48.6%) were S sonnei and 54 strains (51.4%) were S flexneri . Of S flexneri , 66.7% were serotype 2 and 20.4% were serotype 1. The susceptibility rates of S sonnei to fluoroquinolones and cefotaxime were 100% and 94.1% respectively. The susceptibility rate of S flexneri to cefotaxime was 98.1% while the rate to fluoroquinolones was about 70%. Conclusions In Shanghai the main serotype of Shigella spp are S sonnei and S flexneri. Most of Shigella spp (especialy S flexneri ) are multidrug resistant. Susceptibility testing should be performed to guide the reasonable application of antibiotics.
