Differentiation and treatment of carotid atherosclerosis in different patterns with Chinese Medicine:A report of 85 cases

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of carotid atherosclerosis differentiated and treated with Chinese Medicine.Methods One hundred and sixteen cases were divided into treatment group and control group.Thirty cases in control group were treated with simvastatin and 85 cases in treatment group were divided into three patterns:kidney deficiency pattern,blood stasis pattern and phlegm damp pattern,these three patterns were treated with proven Ruanmai Decotion,Maixuekang Capsule and modified Liujunzi Decoction respectively,with a course of 24 weeks.The carotid plexus,intima media thickness and blood lipids were observed before and after treatment.Results No significant difference was found in effects of carotid plexus and intima media thickness between the treatment group and the control group(P0.05),while there was difference in effect of blood lipids(P0.05).Conclusion Differentiation and treatment of carotid atherosclerosis in different patterns with TCM provide a similar therapeutic effect to simvastatin.
