Abstract

Objective To compare ultrasonic findings of carotid morphologic and hemodynamic changes in cerebral infarction patients with that in normal persons. Methods The carotid artery and vertebral artery of 50 cases of in-patients suffering from cerebral infarction and those of 43 cases without cardio-cerebral vascular disease were scanned by color Doppler ultrasound.Dilatation, stenosis intra-media thickening and atherosclerotic plaques were detected.Velocity and RI of the blood flow, size of the plaques were measured. Results Morphologic and hemodynamic changes in carotid artery were present in different degree in the patients with cerebral infarction. The positive rate was 100%, with a significant difference,P0.01, compared with the control group. There were also significant differences between the two groups concerning the aspects of the plaques, IMT increase, dilatation of CCAICAVA, and RI (P0.01).Conclusion Morphologic and hemodynamic changes on carotid artery were discovered in the patients with cerebral infarction, which have a close relationship with the disease and are different from the control group. Therefore more information can be attained for treating and observing cerebral infarction patients by ultrasonic detection of carotid artery.
