Abstract

Objective:To determine effects of Ginkgo Biloba Extract (GBE) on carotid atherosclerotic plaques. Methods:Eighty patients with carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) were randomly assigned to a therapeutic group and a control group. Forty Patients in the therapeutic group were orally administrated by Ginkgo Leaf Dripping Pills (GLDPs) 300 mg tid while forty patients in the control group were orally administrated by tablet enteric coated aspirin 100 mg qd. The length of treatment course in the two groups was six months. The intima-media thickness (ITM),area of carotid plaques,Crouse integrals, and blood flow parameters of carotid arteries were tested using color Doppler ultrasound imaging before and after treatment. Results:After treatment, the IMT,Crouse integrals, plaque area, and carotid resistance were significantly lower in the therapeutic group than those in the control group (P0.05). Conclusions:GBE can reduce and stabilize the atherosclerotic plaques.
