Abstract

The Awakening is the representative work of Kate Chopin,an American women writer.Edna,the protagonist in the novel,tired of the dull family life and hoping to get rid of the shackles imposed on women by the society,awakens from the initial depression and bewilderment to rebel.Edna goes through three phases of awakening: sexual awareness,spiritual awareness and ultimate awakening and finally chooses to die to liberate her soul and body.The three phases of biological and mental awakening in this novel depicts Edna's painful journey to awakening.
