Abstract

Edna Pontellier is the heroine of Kate Chopin's last novel The Awakening.After awakening psychologically and physically,she chooses her own way,being different from those of Adele Ratignoll and Mademoiselle Reisz.The essay tries to analyze Edna's awakening and to compare the differences of life choices among Edna,Adele and Reisz,pointing out that under the social condition of that time,it was inevitable for Edna to kill herself in the sea.
