Clinical Value of Serum Total Bile Acid and AST/ALT Measurement in Diagnosis of Liver Diseases

Abstract

Objective To explore the clinical significance of serum total bile acid and AST/ALT ratio in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of liver diseases.Methods One hundred and sixty-nine patients with liver diseases hospitalized in our hospital(38 cases of acute hepatitis,65 cases of chronic hepatitis,45 cases of liver cirrhosis,and 21 cases of primary liver cancer) were involved in this study.The serum total bile acids values and AST/ALT ratios in these patients were tested by automated biochemical analyzer model TBA-120RF.And the results were statistically analyzed.Results The level of serum TBA in each liver disease group was significantly higher than that of normal control group(P0.01),moreover,the acute hepatitis group had the highest level of TBA,followed by liver cirrhosis group,primary liver cancer group,and chronic hepatitis group.No statistically significant difference was found in the level of serum TBA between primary liver cancer group and chronic hepatitis group(P0.05),but the difference was statistically significant among the other liver diseases groups(P0.01 or P0.05).There were statistically significant differences in the AST/ALT ratio between normal control group and each liver disease group(P0.01).There were statistically significant differences in the AST/ALT ratio among liver diseases groups(P0.01).Conclusions The serum TBA level and AST/ALT ratio not only reflect the severity of liver disease,but also provide a valuable basis for the diagnosis of liver diseases,differential diagnosis,efficacy observation,disease monitoring and prognosis.
