Content of BDNF and Its Receptor TrkB in the Temporal Lobe or Hippocampus of Intractable Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Abstract

Objective To study the content of brain derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)and its receptor-tyrosine kinase receptor B(TrkB)in the temporal lobe and hippocampus of patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy(TLE)and discuss its function in the pathogenesis.Methods Immunohistochemical assay was performed to test the content of BDNF and TrkB in the surgically removed hippocampus and temporal lobe of patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy(n=82).The results were compared with controls(n=11).Results The content of BDNF was significantly increased in temporal lobe cortexes(P0.05)and the hippocampus(P0.01)in intractable temporal lobe epilepsy.The content of TrkB was significantly increased in the hippocampus(P0.01)and the temporal lobe cortexes(P0.01).The content of BDNF and TrkB was increased(P0.01 and P0.05 respectively)in the hippocampus compared with temporal lobe cortexes.Conclusions The results indicated that BDNF and TrkB,overincreased in the temporal and hippocampus of patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy,may play an important role in the generation and development of epilepsy.
