Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effect of fluvastatin on expression of transforming growth factor-β1(TGFβ1)in renal tissue of diabetic rats.Methods Diabetes was induced by injection of streptozotocin in Sprague-Dawley rats.Diabetic rats were treated with fluvastatin for 8 weeks.Urinary protein excretion and plasma concentrations of creatinine and cholesterol were measured.The expression of TGF-β1 was detected at protein and mRNA level in renal tissue.Results Increased urinary protein excretion in diabetic rats was attenuated through treatment with fluvastatin.Overexpression of TGF-β1 was observed in renal tissue of diabetic rats and was attenuated with fluvastatin.Conclusion These findings suggest that fluvastatin may retard the progression of diabetic nephropathy by reducing expression of TGF-β1 in renal tissue.
