Comparison of the liquid-based ThinPrep cytologic screening and biopsy in cervic al lesions

Abstract

Objective To investigate the accuracy of The ThinPrep C ytology Test(TCT) for cervical lesions screening in clinic. Methods All 10980 cases cytologic screening were analysed retrospectively. Th e results of TCT compared with that of biopsy. Results In 817 cases of 10 980 cases cytologic screening received biopsies. The positive r ate of lesions up to low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) was 45.7% (373/817)in TCT and 50.1%(409/817)in biopsies. There was no significant diff erence between them(P0.05). The coinceidence rate of LSIL was 75.8%(191/252), high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) was 98.1%(101/ 103), squamous cells carcinoma(SCC) was 90.9%(10/11) and adenocarcinoma was 85.7 %(6/7). The coinceidence rate of HSIL was signficantly higher than LSIL( P0.01). Conclusion The liquid-based ThinPrep C ytology Test is more propitious to screen cervical cancer and precancerous lesio n. The quality assurance scheme of smeard cytology may improve the accuracy of diagnosis.
