Preoperative finasteride on decreasing operative bleeding during transurethral resection of prostate

Abstract

Objective To evaluate preoperative finasteride on decreasing operative bleeding during TURP,and to study its mechanism. Methods 50 patients pretreated with finasteride 5mg/d for 2 weeks before TURP and 50 patients without such a preoperative management were studied and compared.The weight of resected prostatic tissue the operative time and the calculated operative bleeding volume were recorded.MVD and VEGF expression were measured by ISH SP-method in prostatic tissue. Results In finasteride group and control group the mean resected prostatic tissue was (19.36±7.95)g and (20.32±8.66)g,respectively (P0.05) and the mean operative bleeding (135.8±62.9)ml and (245.1±168.9)ml (P0.05) and the mean MVD volume 21.4±9.7 and 33.4±11.2 (P0.05),the mean positive cell count of VEGF were 112.1±30.1 and 214.6±53.4 respectively (P0.05). Conclusions The preliminary results suggested that VEGF expression and angiogenesis in the prostate tissue are suppressed and blood loss during TURP decreased by the used of preoperative finasteride.
