Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between plasma visfatin and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods From July to September 2007, 40 healthy participants with normal glucose tolerance and 40 cases with T2DM were enrolled. According to body mass index (BMI) they were divided into two groups: obese group and non-obese group. Visfatin, free glucose, free insulin, blood pressure, lipids were measured and the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), BMI, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), HOMA-β were calculated. Results Visfatin level was significantly lower in T2DM group than in controls (P0.05), multiple regression analysis showed that plasma visfatin was negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein C (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and BMI in obese T2DM group. Linear regression analysis found that visfatin and HOMA-IR were significantly linked to the development of T2DM and this was the formulation: Y=7.681+2.417 ln HOMA-IR-2.549 visfatin. Conclusion The change of plasma visfatin level may play a role in the pathogenesis and development of T2DM.
