Abstract
Objective To study the expressions of p57kip2 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and validate the significance in generation and progression. Methods p57kip2 and PCNA expressions were detected by immunohistochemistry in surgically resected specimens (cancer tissues and normal tissues) from 60 ESCC patients, and the results were analyzed combined with clinical pathologic characteristics. Results In esophageal squamous cell carci-noma tissue the positive rate of p57kip2 was28.33%.It was significantly lower than that in the normal esophageal tissue.P57kip2 expression was correlated with depth of invasion and differentiation of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(P0.05). The positive rate of PCNA was 81.67%. It was significantly higher than that in the normal gastric tissue. PCNA expression was correlated with lymph node metastasis, depth of inva-sion and differentiation of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (P0.05). A negative correlation was found between the expressions of p57kip2 protein and PCNA protein (rs =-0.611,P0.01).Conclusion There is a low expression of p57kip2 and high expression of PCNA in ESCC,which are involved in the carcinogenesis and development of ESCC. They may serve as valuable indication for evaluating the malignant level and prognosis in esophageal carcinoma.
