Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical value of endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS) in treatment of chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps. Methods The clinical data of 135(206 sides)cases with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS) in recent 3 years, were retrospectively analyzed. Results Follow-up was performed in all the 135 cases for 6~12 months. 98 cases(72.6%) were cured, symptomatic relief was obtained in 26 cases(19.3%) and inefficacy occurred in 11 cases(8.1%). The total effective rate was 91.9%. Postoperative nasal sinus bleeding occurred in 2 cases and middle turbinate synechiae with nasal septum were found in 4 cases. No severe postoperative complication occurred. Conclusions Endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS) in treatment of chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps has some advantages such as slight trauma and good outcome. Skilled and careful operation and correct postoperative therapy are the important approaches to increase the recovery rate.
