Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the effect and side effects of quetiapine in the treatment of mental disorders due to cerebrovascular disease.Method:60 patients with mental disorders due to cerebrovascular disease were randomly assigned to receiving quetiapine (n=30) or haloperidol treatment (n=30) for 4 weeks. The effect was measured by brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS),mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS).Results:At the end of treatments, the BPRS scores in both groups decreased significantly compared with the baseline (P0.01);the clinical effective rate (86.7%) in quetiapine group was not significantly different from that (80.0%) in haloperidol group (P0.05).However patients in quetiapine group had much fewer side effects than those in haloperidol group, especially in the EPS (extrapyramidal system). Conclusion:Quetiapine had similar efficacy to haloperidol in the treatment of mental disorders due to cerebrovascular disease, but fewer side effects.
